Umbrella Insurance: Reviewing Additional Liability Limits

Umbrella or excess liability insurance may provide additional limits above certain underlying policies, subject to its own terms. It is not a substitute for reviewing the underlying policies or understanding exclusions and required limits.

Check the underlying policies first

List the auto, home, or business policies that might support an umbrella quote. Carriers may require particular underlying limits or policy arrangements. Confirm the requirements and keep the underlying coverage in force as required.

Compare limits, exclusions, and scope

Review what policies are scheduled, which claims may be excluded, whether defense costs affect limits, and how the umbrella coordinates with underlying insurance. Personal and commercial umbrella products are not interchangeable.

Decide whether the added cost fits your risk plan

Compare available limits, premium, eligibility, and policy terms. An umbrella policy does not guarantee protection from every claim; the carrier and contract terms determine whether a loss is covered.
